Brief Understanding of Freud’s concept of Countertransference
Countertransference is like an unconscious recalling of someone by the therapist if the client under therapy has some common characteristics with the one. Usually, the therapists transfer their early family relationships to the client. E.g., The therapist can transfer her sister to the young girl client and may feel overly attached to her. Since the girl is unknown, the attraction is considered completely erotic; claimed by Freud. Freud considers that countertransference is unconsciously built on the sentiments of early family relationships. Hereby, he claims that its forbidden to marry your client.
Management Strategy
In order to recover the effect of countertransference:
• A therapist should work under ‘supervision’.
• A therapist should have expertise to get ‘aware’ of his practice of countertransference.
• The boundaries of ‘limited time and reminders of fees’ may help in mitigating the effects.
